A DUI checkpoint set up by San Diego Police on Friday night in East Village led to several arrests at the scene, plus another two blocks away when a driver fled and crashed into another vehicle.
The San Diego Police checkpoint, designed to apprehend drivers under the influence, was set up at 14th and G streets from 11 p.m. Friday to 3 a.m. Saturday. Of the 1,114 vehicles that went through the checkpoint, 454 were screened and 11 drivers were evaluated. Nine suspects were arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence either at or near the checkpoint, according to SDPD officer Anthony Obregon.

One driver who pulled into the checkpoint in a white Audi was undergoing screening and when a police officer attempted to open his driver's side door and he drove off. While traveling eastbound on G Street he ran a red light at 16th street and was T-boned by a driver in a Range Rover who had entered the intersection on a green light. The DUI suspect fled on foot and was later arrested by officers on Highway 94. The driver of the Range Rover was injured in the crash and taken to a nearby hospital.
Police officials said the suspect had a loaded handgun in his car and his blood alcohol tested at .17, well over the legal limit.
